Dealing With Diseases In Islam

A lot of people may say that no way Islam can deal with diseases and viruses because Islam is too old; and doesn’t’ have the modern technology that we have right now… so what do you think about that ??

The answer is : Qur’an and Sunnah are the main life teachings guide for all people around the world. It gives us certain rules which Islam has prescribed for the benefit of all people where ever they are in the whole world, and these teachings are not limited to Muslims only.

Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said Whatever Allah wills good for a person, Be subjected him to adversity. One of these adversity it may be illness.

Islam has prescribed certain guidelines to deal with infectious disease outbreaks that affect a community, or even the entire world. The recent coronavirus (COVID-19) { coronavirus COVID-19 } is one such case in point. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was teaching all of his followers great hygiene practices that are still applicable in the 21st century since more than 1400 years ago.

The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said, “Do not cause harm, and don’t get harmed” This statement clarifies a general principle that is used in all aspects of life, and which appropriately applies in situations of outbreaks. A Muslim must avoid harming others if they are affected with a disease that has a likelihood of harming another person/people. Likewise, a Muslim must be careful not to get harmed, and must protect themselves appropriately. We call it now the quarantine.

Some people, during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) , thought that using medicine might be against the concept of relying on Allah. Those people asked, “Messenger of Allah, should we use medicine?” The Prophet replied, “Yes, you may use medicine. Allah has not created any disease without also creating its cure, except one: old age.” (Abu Dawud). The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) clarified that it is fine to use medicine, and even encouraged, and this does not violate the concept of trusting in Allah. On other hand the messenger of Allah Muhammad (S.A.W.) has encouraged the discovery of treatments for diseases.

Dealing With Diseases In Islam

Facts

According to the Center for Disease Control in the USA, some viruses can be transmitted most readily by respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. What is known as droplet spread can happen when droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled a short distance (up to 3 feet) through the air and deposited on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes of persons who are nearby. Some viruses also can spread when a person touches a surface; or object contaminated with infectious droplets; and then touches his/her mouth, nose, or eye.

From the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) , we find evidence that clearly indicates Islam’s stance on coughing and sneezing openly. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) instructed the believers to cover their faces when sneezing. The most obvious effect of sneezing; and coughing without covering the mouth is the spread of airborne bacteria; and viruses, in addition, droplets invisible to the naked eye; may fall onto surfaces or other people.

The teaching and principles of Islam are designed to benefit all of humankind. Rules and recommendations for personal hygiene and cleanliness promote the well-being of individuals and communities. Infection control is inherent in Islamic hygiene behavior. Ablution or washing the (hands – nose – foot – toes -face- hair) , taking shower, covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing, voluntary isolation, when one is feeling unwell, and restricted travel is an effective and comprehensive public health strategy (Stay at Home). Measures taken in the 21st century to prevent the spread of infections; and viruses conform almost exactly to the hygiene; and infection control practices taught by Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).

All Muslims must avoid harming others if they catch a disease; that has a likelihood of harming another person/people. All Muslims must be careful not to get harmed, and must protect themselves appropriately. It is fine to use medicine, and even encouraged, and this does not violate the concept of trusting in Allah. Be self-aware. Be aware of your negative thoughts and feelings. Remind yourself that Allah loves those who are patient during difficulty. Don’t forget to know some information about:
